"The FRA was an integral part of the scheme as it is located within the 100year flood zone, so required particular attention to demonstrate some minor benefits in terms of flood risk, than that which exists."

Mallison Bridge

Exeter

We were appointed by Exeter City Council to help them prepare the outline design and an FRA to support a planning application for the replacement of the existing Mallison Bridge and the creation of a new boardwalk adjacent to Exeter Quay.

The existing laminated timber footbridge is nearing the end of its serviceable life and it is proposed to be replaced with a steel beam bridge with a stainless steel wire balustrade connected to an elevated boardwalk to tie into existing higher ground around the north abutment of the Cricklepit Bridge.

An initial meeting was held on site to discuss the scope of the proposed works and ensure the EA understood what works are proposed. The conclusion of this initial meeting was that all parties considered the proposals to be acceptable in principle, subject to a site-specific FRA and further design development.

Our FRA was submitted as part of ECC's planning application for these works. Outline permission was granted in December 2018.

As can be seen from the CGIs above, the new bridge and boardwalk look really impressive and we look forward to seeing this new waterside space being delivered to enable more people to enjoy the Exeter Quays area.
