"We are working with Peter Matravers and Dan Hart and their team at AWP at both of the large Duchy of Cornwall developments at Poundbury, Dorchester and Nansledan, Newquay. The latest piece of the masterplan jigsaw at Nansledan has been working up a detailed planning submission for the proposed primary school. Both Peter and Dan have added their expertise to the project team to enable this to be worked up and submitted within 10 weeks."

Nansledan Primary School

Newquay, Cornwall

One of the key elements of the masterplan for any large development is the provision of a primary school. We have worked on Nansledan, the urban extension at Newquay, since the inception of AWP in 2012 and were pleased to be asked by the Duchy to help secure planning permission for the new school.

We provided engineering and masterplanning work to support the planning application. As well as ensuring the school could be accessed in its final masterplan position we also had to ensure that it could operate in a standalone state until the surrounding development and infrastructure was in place. Therefore whilst working within a very compressed timeframe to prepare the application we also had to consider the phasing implications. The AWP team, led by Pete, provided the transport, drainage and services advice and worked closely with the large Duchy design team to ensure the design was coordinated.

Nansledan Primary School was granted planning permission in 2017. We subsequently undertook the infrastructure design work to help discharge planning conditions and obtained Cornwall Council's approval for a S278 for the new school access.

The school was opened for the 2019-20 academic year and marked a key milestone in the growth of this urban extension at Newquay which will ultimately accommodate 4,000 dwellings, employment uses, a new high street and food retail as well as other mixed uses.
